The IWLA, Jefferson County, is a non-profit organization promoting conservation, education and recreational opportunities in target shooting, trap, skeet, black powder, fishing, picnicking, and archery.
New Summer Skeet League
We are tentatively setting up a Summer Skeet League for this year. It will be a travelling league with two other clubs, Tuscarora and Hagerstown, and will consist of nine shoots beginning mid-May. There will be three shoots at each club alternating at each location.
The league will be open to members and non-members but all shooters must be affiliated with one club of their choice. The highest five scores from each club each week will go toward determining the overall winning club after the last shoot.
Shooting will consist of 50 targets each week and will be held every other Saturday from 8am to 2pm. The exact dates are being worked out to insure the shoots won't be bumping up against other activities already scheduled at the three clubs.
The cost for this league will be $15/week.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at: Raymond@Raysguns.com
2026 Summer Trap League
The club's Summer trap league will begin on Monday, May 4, 2026, and will run for 12 consecutive weeks. Shooting will begin at 4pm. and end at 8pm each evening. The cost is $13/week or $156 for all 12 weeks. This includes targets and entry to the banquet which will take place two weeks after the league ends. Also, on the four Mondays in April, trap will be open from 4pm to 7pm for practice. Practice rounds are $5 for members, $7 for non-members and $5 for juniors.
If you are interested in shooting, no experience is necessary and you do not need to be a club member, but you will need a shotgun and ammo (available at the club for very reasonable prices). While it can be competitve, some people just come out for the social aspect and have some fun for a few weeks. All are welcome either way. Team signups can begin 3/3/2026. Stop by the clubhouse and fill out one of the colored cards for this purpose.
Teams consist of five shooters. You can form your own team or join an existing team by signing up on a list that is located in the clubhouse. If you do not want to shoot on a regular team, you can sign up to be a substitute, but you will need to be there on the day if substitutes are needed. Additional information can be obtained from the dedicated trap website (link is under the Shotgun Sports/Trap button above).
Possible Steel plate ranges and 50 yard range activities
The club is planning to start having pistol shoots starting this April and would like to find out what types of shoots people might enjoy. In the past, the club has had 2x4 shoots, 22 card splitting, 22 plate range shoots, center fire range timed speed shoots, variety shoots with everyone bringing their favorite target, bowling pin shoots, 22 golf ball shoots, and possibly some others. If members are interested, would the preference be to pay a little to shoot and a 50/50 split of the money, or just a fun shoot? Please note that run and gun style shooting and drawing from a holster are not permitted. Also, any non-paper targets must be approved by the Executive Board. If interested, members should contact Dave Vetter at:
Electronic Gate Won't Open?
At the December, 2025 monthly member meeting, it was announced that the code for the double gates would no longer be provided to members. The code was provided to members in case of an emergency only. Unfortunately, members began using the double gates for other than emergencies (forgetting your key fob does not constitute an emergency), neglecting to close the gates when leaving, giving out the combination to non-members, and in the most recent case, cutting the combination lock off altogether. So, as the saying goes, bad apples have spoiled the barrel.
In the event the automatic gate won't open, in most cases, if we know the gate is malfunctioning, we will lock the automatic gate open until it is repaired. If you get caught inside the gate, Richard Wenger, the club's custodian, lives in the trailer adjacent to the clubhouse and he can help. Also, there is a list of contact numbers on the bulletin board just to the left of the kitchen counter in the clubhouse. All members on the list are located fairly close to the club and can come to assist you.
We are obviously unhappy having to make this decision, but it was necessary.
Club house changes - In order to better utilize/improve the parking area in front of the club house, the light pole and the flag poles were removed from the middle of the parking lot. The telephone pole with light is now just outside the front door to the club house. The flag pole has been moved to just behind the club house on the right side. The ground just outside the club house has been converted to a flower bed filled with flowering shrubs. Cement curb markers have also been installed to maximize parking spaces.
Email - As many of our members know, the club sends out informational emails from time to time updating members about club activities. If you are a member, would like to receive email from the club and are not receiving them, please contact us at: leetownwviwla@gmail.com and your email address will be added or corrected. Note: An unusually large number of emails on file for members are being kicked back as "undeliverable". If you have supplied a valid email address and are not receiving email from the club, check the spam filters for your email provider and any filters that may be preventing the club's emails from reaching you.
Pond News - The ponds are full again! After what seems like an eternity, the repairs to the two ponds have been completed and the dams are full of water again. Most of us were shocked and overjoyed that the ponds filled up so quickly because we hadn't noticed that much water coming into the ponds while the dams were breached. It may take some time for the ponds to settle after having all manner of vegetation growing in them for so long, but eventually we will be able to introduce fish back into them. In fact, the lower pond still had a few fish in a small area that did not completely drain when the dam was breached for repair. Access to the lower pond is better now because the excavating company widened the trail to it and cleared the access area adjacent to the dam for vehicles to park and turn around. It may take some time for the ground to settle so right now there is a good amount of mud laying around but hopefully once vegetation sets in again, it will be easier to access.
Notice Regarding Firearms in the Clubhouse - At the November, 2024, regular monthly member meeting, a resolution was passed unanimously which restricts bringing firearms into the clubhouse. This was done for safety reasons.
Effective immediately, members will no longer be permitted to bring firearms into the clubhouse. Exceptions include firearms that are brought in for raffles/auctions and for sanctioned training events. For the exceptions, the firearms must be unloaded and bolt removed, action in the open position or other recognized method for making the firearm inoperable.
Concealed and open carry firearms will continue to be permitted in the clubhouse, but no handling of these firearms will be permitted inside.
Gate Key Fob Notice - Issues and questions regarding the Gate Key Fob or questions regarding membership can be resolved at any of the monthly member meetings or by contacting Kellie Harding at info@jeffersoncountywviwla.com.
Inclement Weather Notice - If Jefferson County schools are cancelled due to weather on a day when a regular monthly Club meeting is scheduled, that meeting will be canceled and business held over to the following month.
Space Available on Boat Rack - The Pond Committee expanded the boat storage rack and there are several spaces available to rent. The boat spaces rent for only $20.00 per year. The spaces accommodate boats approximately 48″ wide. You will be issued a stainless steel lock & key with your rental payment.
If you are interested in storing your boat, canoe, or kayak at our Upper Pond site, please contact Keith Baker at keithlbaker@gmail.com.
